Why Korean?

You may be looking at my art and asking yourself this question. Let me share with you a little story time…

It’s been a long journey to this point (metaphorically and literally!) that started with ASMR and ended with a 14 hour flight to Seoul.

Back in 2022, I was deep into ASMR YouTube. I would listen to it during work and before bed, to help calm my anxious mind. One day, when the algorithm was feeling lucky, I was recommended Korean soft-spoken ASMR and it instantly became my favourite. There’s something about this language for me that just … fits. A little spark ignited in my soul and from then on, I knew I would do everything I could to learn it.

I remember looking at 한글 (the Korean alphabet) and realising that I had a colossal mountain to climb, and that it was going to take me the rest of my life.

Fast forward to summer 2023, after many months of self-study had passed. I could speak and read basic Korean, and decided impulsively to book a flight to South Korea. (I should also mention that I have a crippling fear of flying. I don’t know what I was thinking. I wasn't thinking.)

But - I did it.

I travelled 6000 miles across the world, alone. I landed in Seoul in September 2023, and knew in my heart that my life had just shifted to some other timeline that I could never have imagined. Literally, life-changing.

So the reason I include Korean translations of my work is because I have a deep love and respect for this beautiful and complex language, and I want to share that with others.

Although I have a basic understanding of Korean, I am nowhere near being able to translate accurately, or with the required level of nuance. So I want to express my gratitude to my language partners - Joy, Shin and Charm - for helping me, and for being patient with my (many) questions.

감사합니다❣️
